Ground Array (Solar Ground Rack)
The solar array can be mounted in a number of configurations. This one is tucked behind a garage. A ground mount such as this will produce more power than a roof mount. This is due to cooler module temperature as air can circulate behind the array. A roof mount has limited air circulation thus hotter module temperatures.

Generac Generator
Having a reliable generator is key to an off grid system. This Generac 18KW generator has an auto start capability so the inverter can start the generator when it needs to charge the batteries. The shed that this generator is mounted in greatly reduces the noise level.

Sunny Island Inverters + Charge Controllers
Using two Sunny Islands this off grid system has 120/240 VAC power for the well pump. We liked this setup because the Sunny Islands both produce AC power and act as charge controllers for the batteries. The best part is that the solar array can be placed anywhere there’s AC power in the system. So as with this install the batteries and generator were placed a good distance from the home with very little power loss and only one set of AC conductors needed to supply power from and to the batteries. This system used the new Sunny Island 5048U 5000 watt inverters.

Grid Tie with Battery Backup
This grid tied solar power system not only sells power back to the grid, it also allows the home owner to provide power to critical loads when the grid power fails. With a daily dose of sun this standby power should last these folks until the utility power comes back on. They even have the choice to recharge there battery bank from a standby generator. Now that's a nice feeling of comfort and security.

Solar Power Shed (Outback Solar Power)
An Outback 3600 watt power panel mounted in a redwood shed. The generator is on the left and there’s a tool room on the right. This shed is placed far enough away from the home that when the generator has to run you can’t hear it. With current equipment we have the capability of locating the solar array and the power panel at great distances from each other and the home. Good stuff!
